In 2024, he was awarded the Thomas Berry Award for holistic ecological education. Thomas Berry’s ideas through the Earth Charter were inspirational to An Gairdin Beo and its new Cosmic Garden Walk.
Dr. Cathy Fitzgerald of Haumea Ecoversity, a County Carlow resident, will introduce Peter’s remarkable career in international sustainability education. She will highlight his longstanding contributions to embedding ethical ideas with Earth Charter for diverse communities, education and business

It is also been signalled as an important document for the UN COP30 meeting in Belem, Brazil, in December 2025, for the proposed Global Ethic Stocktake for greater efforts for climate action.

From its initial proposal at the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio to 2025—when we celebrate its 25th anniversary—the Earth Charter has undergone decades of evolution and is used in many contexts . Over an eight-year drafting period (1992–2000), it emerged from a truly global civil-society process, gathering input from people of all professions, cultures, faiths and traditions. In 2000, the Earth Charter was formally launched as a unified, holistic ethical framework of care, of environmental, social justice, democracy and peace principles designed to guide individual and collective action across all societies.
In 2025, awareness of why we need an inclusive, holistic ethical vision is growing: Earth Charter 25+ is inspiring young and old, communities and businesses worldwide to uphold respect for nature, defend human rights, and foster peace.
